How do you track production costs in a small workshop?

We book materials, wages and other workshop costs so you can see what each product or order costs you to make.

Say you make windows to order. The timber, glass and fittings belong to that order, and so do the hours your staff spend on it. When costs are booked this way, you can check whether your price covers them.

Materials and finished products you still hold at the end of the year are your stock. Their value goes into the annual report, which is due by 30 June. A stock count at the end of each year keeps that figure close to reality.

As a VAT-registered company you can usually deduct the 24% VAT on materials, tools and machinery you buy for the business. Our monthly bookkeeping covers costing, stock and VAT together.

What changes when you hire staff?

Each new employee must be entered in the employment register (TÖR) before their first working day.

After that, wages are reported every month in the payroll tax return (TSD). It is due by the 10th of the following month. On top of gross pay, the employer pays social tax of 33%.

How can you plan around festivals and the tourist season?

If you rent out rooms to visitors, accommodation is taxed at the 13% VAT rate instead of 24%. Most other sales stay at 24%, so each line on the invoice needs the right rate.

Temporary staff for an event are employees like any other. They need a register entry before they start, and their pay goes into that month's payroll return.
